Healthy Food for All
The low-income share program is a partnership between CSA farms and Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE). It provides subsidized CSA shares to low income families and offers a free cooking and nutrition class (through CCE) based on the weekly CSA share to participants. The class focuses on vegetables that are in the share that week - everyone has loved cooking and eating together, sharing recipes and stories!
This will be the third year of the program, which began with the Full Plate Farm Collective as a pilot CSA, grew last year (2007) to include Early Morning Organic Farm and this year (2008) will also include Sweet Land Farm and Three Sisters Farm.
The first year 18 subsidized shares were offered and last year 36 shares were offered. We believe we can fund at least 50 shares this year (2008).
Funding is provided by a combination of grants secured by CCE, fund raising by the farms, and generous gifts from CSA members. Participants in the program pay a small amount towards their share per week.
We are able to accept Foodstamps as the members payment towards their share.
Significant and successful outreach was conducted by CCE in 2007 to recruit members who were not already familiar with CSA’s in
an effort to
reach a diverse population. This program serves the very
real need of making good food accessible for all people in our
community.
