Strawberries by Early Morning Farm CSA

This delicious berry does not need much explanation and is best eaten warm off the plant at the beginning of summer!  The strawberry season is very short, we often get just one or two weeks of strawberries in our CSA shares,  but once you’ve tried a strawberry in season it will be hard to eat the supermarket variety.  If you can stop yourself from eating them all fresh out of the container they are excellent in salads, on top of ice cream and cake, paired with rhubarb, and made into jam.


Storage

Very perishable.  Store unwashed with stems intact, wash just before eating.  Store leftover sliced strawberries covered and sprinkled with sugar to use as a topping for ice cream or shortcake.


Preparation

Wash thoroughly, remove stems.  Eat as is or thinly slice to add to salads, use for jam, ice cream topping, with shortcake, and even drizzled with balsamic vinegar and topped with whipped cream and mint.  A perfect compliment to rhubarb.
